AV - Areopagus (1)
- Mars Hill (1) [2]
1) Areopagus, a rocky height in the city of Athens, opposite the
western end of the Acropolis. It rises gradually from the
northern end, and terminates abruptly on the south, over
against the Acropolis, at which point it is about fifty or sixty
feet above the valley. The hill belonged to Mars and was
called Mars Hill, because as the story went, Mars having slain
Halirrhothius, son of Neptune, for the attempted violation of
his daughter Alcippe, was tried before twelve gods as judges
here. The Hill is memorable as the place of the meeting of the
Council of Areopagus. This body existed as a criminal tribunal
before the time of Solon, and was the most ancient and
venerable of all the Athenian courts. It consisted of all
persons who held the office of archon, and who were members of
the council for life unless expelled for misconduct. Before
the time of Solon the court tried only cases of wilful
murder, wounding, poison and arson; but he gave it extensive
powers of a censorial and political nature. The council
continued to exist even under the Roman emperors. Its meetings
were held on the southeastern summit of the rock. The
Areopagus is of special interest to Christians as the spot
from which Paul delivered his memorial address to the men of
Athens. He disputed daily in the market or "agora" which was
situated south of the Areopagus in the valley lying between
this and the hills of the Acropolis, the Pnyx and the Museum.
Attracting more and more attention, "certain philosophers of
the Epicureans and Stoics" brought him up the valley, probably
by the stone steps, to the Areopagus above, that they might
listen to him more conveniently.
00698
0698 Areopagites {ar-eh-op-ag-ee'-tace}
from 697; TDNT - omitted,omitted; n m
AV - Areopagite (1)
1) a member of the court of Areopagus, an Areopagite. One who
was a judge in the court Areopagus: how many judges that court
consisted of is not certain, nor whether there was one who was
superior to the rest; if there was such an one, Dionysius
seems to have been he, since he is called the Areopagite. The
business of the court was not only to try cases of murder,
which seems to have been the origin of it; but by these judges
the rights of the city were preserved and defended, war was
proclaimed, and all law-suits adjusted and decided; and they
made it their business to look after the idle and the slothful
persons, and inquire how they lived: they always heard and
judged causes in the night, in the dark, because they would
only know the facts, and not persons, lest they should be
influenced by their affections, and be led wrong; they were
very famous in other nations for their wisdom and skill, for
their gravity and strict justice. Dolabella, proconsul of
Asia, having a woman brought before him for poisoning her
husband and son, which she confessed, and gave reasons for
doing it, referred the matter to a council, who refused to
pass sentence; upon which he sent the case to Athens, to the
Areopagites, as to judge "more grave and more experienced":
and hence these words of Julian the emperor. "let an
Areopagite be judge, and we will not be afraid of the
judgment."
